Guachinches

The island's best-kept open secret: simple family eateries in the north (and increasingly the hills of the south) selling home cooking and their own wine at low prices. Look for hand-painted signs on the road to La Orotava or around El Sauzal. Cash helps.

Menu del dia

Weekday lunch menus (starter, main, dessert and a drink) run roughly 10-15 euros away from the seafront. The same money on the promenade buys a pizza - walk one street back.

Drinks

Local Dorada beer, Malvasia wines from the island, and a Barraquito after dinner. Tap water is safe but tastes of chlorine; most people buy bottled.
